Simon’s JOTI report

21 October 2012

Thanks to all of you who attended JOTI at the Hut – wow, what an amazing success!! At the end of this post I will list the countries we talked to – bear in mind that some of them we spoke to several cities and places. We have illustrated a world map of our conversations and will display this at the hut. You can also view the JOTI gallery on this website.  If other Scouts have joined in from home and can add any other countries then great! I really want someone to reach Ukraine and Iceland!

The Spaghetti yesterday was fantastic thanks to Mark, one of our Assistant Beaver Leaders who used to be a Gary Rhodes chef – kept that rather secret! Samantha, the other Assistant Beaver leader led Dungeons and Dragons for an epic seven hours at least and lots of scouts and cubs loved that. The board games were good too, the relax area well used and the camp fire just awesome with action songs by Shelley and some rocket stoves made throughout the day by Chris Pullen – they were brilliant. Shelley and I also did a Shadow Theatre show set in Paris which was fun. Then some scouts went on a night hike whilst others watched Neverending Story on the DVD before bed.

All the time groups were in the internet room chatting to the world! On the Leaders channel, so many of the leaders claimed exhaustion and were praying for a cold beer! The light sabre battle lasted from yesterday lunchtime until this morning – when I was finally defeated, but Toby rose in my stead.

The night was fairly cool – a bunch of the scouts camping outside (and Young Leader Toby appeared to have slept in front of his tent rather than in it) but all the Cubs and Scouts were fighting fit for their bacon and egg baps this morning!

Thank you to Ian (who should have been on holiday – sorry Stephanie – but advised me in organising my first camp), Liam (for running the JOTI room), Chris Pullen and Mark (for fire), Chris Jones (for technical wizardry), Samantha (for actual wizardry), Michelle for being there at just the right time, Toby (for axework beyond the call of duty), Calvin (who stayed all weekend despite being poorly in the week), Caroline (intrepid night hiker), Shelley (for Paris in the moonlight).

Thank you also to the scouts for leaving us more of their smelly socks.
